A marketing image disaster - Victoria’s Secret - “it’s where the fat ladies shop”
VS merged with Lane Bryant?
Don Draper would never have approved pitching that campaign.
This article jogged my memory, a few years back, three "feminist" activists banded together and started organizing petition drives to get Victoria's Secret to change their longtime slogan: "The Perfect Body."
Caving in to the pressure, the company did indeed change their slogan to the very lame and boring "A Body For Every Body" and that started the downfall of the brand.
But even THAT was not enough for the three creators of the petition drive, the three women - Gabriella Kountourides, Laura Ferris and Frances Black - issued this joint statement at the time saying the change of the slogan wasn't enough.
"We are overjoyed that Victoria's Secret have listened to the public and changed the wording to 'A Body for Every Body', as we feel that this sends out a more inclusive, healthy message. However, we are still waiting for Victoria's Secret to apologise and pledge that they will not use such harmful marketing in the future, as we do not feel it is enough for them to just change the wording. We would also like them to change all advertising in their stores that still bears the text 'The Perfect 'Body''. As such, we will continue promoting the petition and the campaign."
See what happens when you start to cave in to a few loudmouths? Once you go down that road and start apologizing, your tormentors will be empowered and now they will never go away until you are literally driven out of business and destroyed.
Here's a news article about it from 2014
They should have stuck with the original slogan.
