Authorities received reports of an issue involving Delta Flight 447, which was headed for Atlanta, around 1:30 p.m., according to Orange County Fire Authority.

Officials say one of the engines on the Boeing 757-200 caught on fire as the plane was positioned at the beginning of the runway. 172 passengers and crew were on board at the time.

“The right side engine blew off as we were halfway down the runway and kind of skidded off the road,” said Tim Carlson, one of the passengers. “We saw a big burst of flames and then black smoke.”

The pilot initiated an extinguishing system while emergency crews were able to extinguish the flames. The aircraft was eventually towed back to a boarding gate so passengers could deplane.

Any aborted takeoff you can walk away from is a good takeoff.

Those are the noise abatement flight rules. I flew out of Orange County before those rules were implemented and it felt a lot safer. The high climb rate to the ocean is unnerving, to say the least.

A flight took off?

I thought everyone was grounded because the FAA got hacked?

If hacking was the cause, I’d be worried they didn’t do a thorough enough investigation to ensure everything is now secure.

If this flight is taking off at 1:30 pm PST, and they halted all traffic at 9:00 am EST, we’re talking 8 hours of investigating, restoring data, reviewing code and security settings, permissions, software settings, etc., etc.?

One of the oldest in the fleet. Slowly being replaced by Airbus A321’s.

San Diego dangerous?

Pfft.... That’s nothing, according to queen Hillary of Cankles, when she flew into Sarajevo there was cannon fire and surface to air missiles criss-crossing the skies trying to shoot her down.

I've met people at that airport but, fortunately, never flown in or out of it. It does make you wonder "Who designs these things?"

OTOH, San Diego is a major naval base and used to be a pleasant place to live, so I suppose it is child's play for a retired Navy pilot used to flying off and landing on aircraft carriers.

Very, very few commercial pilots have such experience.

Ketchikan and Sitka Alaska airports are no fun either.

Last time I flew into Ketchikan, we had just touched down when the pilot went full throttle and pulled us back up, circled around and then landed. Then he came on the radio and said if we thought that was scary, we should have seen the look on the bald eagle’s face that he almost hit. He said it dropped the salmon on the runway too.

On a good day when you land, the pilot is on the brakes so hard your face is in the seatback in front of you!

Now they don't. I am guessing there were a lot more of them available when San Diego airport was designed.

I know a former US Air pilot, late 70s, who aged out of the commercial fleets but STILL has a job training younger pilots just because he loves the work. He was a USN Pilot who flew off carriers before he got the US Air job.
