Catana Perez in Captain from Castile is one of the greatest heroines in all literature, and this was not developed in the movie. Also I thought Tyrone Power was miscast.
In the movie version of Prince of Foxes the entire crux of the story was left out: the Sainte. The scene in which she confronts Cesare Borgia, the embodiment of evil, is one of the best in literature. Borgia, hoping to entrap her into heresy and turn her over to the Inquisition asks if she hears the voice of God. She replies that she does. He asks why he doesn't hear it, and she replies (to paraphrase) that it is because he will not listen. That moment was spellbinding. They left the whole thing out of the movie.
Haven’t heard of any of them.
There is a nod to Stalag 17 in a lesser known movie called Escape To Athena.
I enjoyed this movie.
Have seen some and liked the ones I saw, especially Waking Ned Devine. My go to for this category is older, My Favorite Year.

Thanks. I’ve seen two on this list: Chloe and Annihilation. That was long enough ago that I don’t have a strong recollection, other than that I found them watchable but not something to which I would return. In both instances, I think I was attracted by some of the actors involved. Which is what makes this list interesting. There are a LOT of big names here, both actors and directors. Sometimes a film has worthy ambitions and plenty of talent attached, but just doesn’t stick the landing.
Anyhow, I’m a sucker for the most overlooked/most underrated lists. Bookmarking this for future reference.
Agreed! Very satisfying movie.
I don’t think I’ve seen any of those you listed.
yep
Just watched Zulu the other day. I had forgotten what a great movie that was. Forgotten history - and 100% acceptably NON-WOKE!!!
“...but movies “today” are made by people that want to make money...”
I remember a quote, from Charlton Heston, I believe. Something to the effect that the problem with making movies as Art is that it’s a Business, and the problem with making movies as a Business is that it’s Art.
One of my favorite movies...and I’m not much of a movie watcher.
Wow...never heard of any of them. But then I haven’t been in a theater since 2005. However, I think Perfume must be based on a book by a German author I read in the 80s. That was a freaky book so may have to hunt down that movie.
Christine!
I remember what Siskel adn Ebert said years ago.
“The early movie makers were raised on great literature and they made movies of great literature.
Today’s movie makers were raised on comic books.”
Never seen any of them...and never will.
Strange Brew with Bob and Doug, the Makenzie brothers!
