The physical contact between these two players was incidental to what actually caused Damar Hamlin to collapse. Additional padding or penalizing on-field moves that have been around for a century would be nothing but a misdirection.

Add padding and everyone slows down, can’t move as deftly, and figures some way to cheat the padding rules.

Illegal moves. Will need more refs and camreas and replay reviews, probably with AI analysis of the video.

So, let’s just go to virtual video football. Each player has a console. Nobody physically touches anybody. All moves are legal. John Madden Football, live.
