We are just about in the same place that we were before the 'civil war'... the Whig Party had become non-functional and was replaced by the new Republican Party. The Republican Party adamantly opposed the Democrat Party and slavery --- the result was a war between the states, division of families and thousands of deaths. The Democrat Party survived.
