Based on the story, I wonder if the criminal charge relates to the fact the clerk left the scene without summoning medical help for the perp. The clerk says he didn’t know he shot the perp, but police found the perp outside the store and still alive. The perp later died.

I’m guessing the police are saying that the perp could have survived if the clerk had called for help in a timely manner. Instead, the clerk locked the store and left the premises.

That is most likely the reason. Lack of clarity.
It could be that the clerk was still shaken up and not thinking clearly when he drove off, simply thankful to have survived that expected shoot out. This doesn’t excuse not following the correct steps, but may help explain his state of mind.

Seeing the outcome, one dead nogoodnik, I think the clerk should get some kind of prize.

Lots of gaps in this story. If indeed he sent the thug to a better place as stated he walks if I’m on the jury. Still lots of unknowns in this one.
