He might be referring to what’s called the ““lub-dub”, what you hear when the heart beats. Between the lub and the dub, maybe?

This is theoretically true. However, it is very unlikely wearing football pads because much like a bullet proof vest the design spreads the energy from the hit to a larger area. If this were not true we would frequently see players leave the game with severe bruising to the chest.
