The winter is already brutal on your car because of the conditions, but drivers can make things harder by turning on the vehicle to let it warm up before driving.
One thing some do when the temperatures are cold outside is to start the car and let the engine warm up a few seconds before driving. Several auto experts believe this may not be conducive to preserving the engine.

Yeah thats sounds right. I dont push it the first few minutes, because I want the transmission to naturally ease itself into higher gears, i dont want to force it by just driving hard right away. You can feel how the transmission just loosens up after a few minutes and then its shifting just like its a summer drive.
"For drivers with electric vehicles, Napa shares helpful tips on its company blog.
Napa says the most effective way to preserve your battery range on cold days is to allow the EV to run for a few minutes before pulling out of the driveway to give the cabin time to warm up. "
“This is the real story. Don’t let your car warm up because you’ll pollute the air! ”
Yep, this is the real story. Putting a load on a cold engine contributes to rapid wear especially on the cylinders and pistons.
This thread will be full of opinions.
That stated, the article contains so little info that it’s completely useless.
I’m not in the mood to type of a lengthy piece other than to state that if you’re in a region where the temp gets to <20degF and you don’t have synthetic oil, you’re a fool.
Beyond that, do what feels right, check your antifreeze & turn OFF your wipers BEFORE shutting off the engine.
The opposite is true. Engines are designed to operate at around 180 to 190 degrees Fahrenheit for optimum wear and performance. I have rebuilt engines that were run without thermostats for extended periods of time. It’s not a pretty sight.
What a bunch of hooey. People have been warming up their cars in the winter for decades. I’ve never once heard of any mechanic saying “Oh yeah, your engine is blown because you warmed it up in the winter.”
Like someone in Phoenix knows about cold weather. The sooner the car warms up the sooner it goes into closed loop mode and the modern engine controls reduce emission levels. Been warming cars up for 5-20 minutes for years in Minnesota frigid weather when Temps get below 10 degrees or so. Have gotten 200,000 to 300,000 miles out them for years and they usually rust out before the motor goes.
Firestone Complete Auto Care makes money by servicing cars.
Coincidence? I think not.
He left it on at the advice of the large corporation he drives for.
Zactly. The real thrust of this article. So now, when warming up my car, I'm going to set an old tire on fire.
I did just that when I lived in Northern minn when the temp is -15 or more, run out side unplug engine heater, start car turn heat on defrost run back in house to get warm 15 minutes later go get in a warm car with square tires
So when I run over somebody or crash into them because I can’t see because I didn’t warm the engine up enough for the defroster to work, I’m off the hook because I am saving the planet, right?
The idiots who write this stuff apparently don’t actually live in an environment where it gets really cold.
Faux.
>>About 30 seconds until you hear the idle drop to normal.<<
I give it a minute until the clattering stops...
Warming up your car before you unplug it and drive away is recommended with an EV because it helps save the battery range.
And using household electricity to warm your car will cost you big time.
Someone in Phoenix is not going to tell me how to warm up my car in below zero Minnesota. Go sit on a cactus.
No Benefit?
I am not getting into a 0 degree car and driving off.
Do what you want.
My car idles for 15 at least. 20 if it is iced up.
For those driving an aspirated vehicle, let it warm up.
(for the benfit of the ICE challenged on this thread)
Just plug up the block heater on cood nights and get in a frost free warm vehicle the next morning. I’d a whole lot prefer offsetting these fools nonsense with some greenery that at least makes sense and benefits me in a tangible way.
Is that when you tell the wife to get out? :)
Plug that baby in post haste!
