Reagan spent his second term using the productive miracle of the US Economy to demonstrate the unsustainability of both the Soviet Union and Communism without use of the military or firing a shot.
The fact that the Soviet Union continued to dissolve for three years AFTER Reagan left office proves his method of Diplomacy successful.
The funding of American Afghan Policy through Reagan's second term and subsequent NeoCon Presidents resulted in serious Islamic Terrorism blowback and the eventual US humiliation in Afghanistan.
Reagan succeeded where US Military Policy failed, it's a simple as that.

No, you are rewriting history in your service to Russia.
Reagan first set out to stop Russia from attacking us/NATO in what intelligence circles and myself thought was going to be about 1984.
Once Russia was deprived of that window of opportunity it was thought that they would not have such a chance again for at least another 10+ years, Russian leaders kept dying and the Reagan war machine and our economy kept excelling, the communists were forced to try dealing with Reagan and their leader number 4 was to lead during this time of no chance of defeating us, eventually, that leader made a fatal mistake of lessening his grip on his slave states, and his empire crumbled too rapidly for him to realistically stop it.
Afghanistan worked, and Reagan’s war machine/economy/NATO alliances worked and he combined that toughness with his great powers of iron fist/velvet glove diplomacy and he adapted his toughness and diplomacy to each new change that his successes offered.
Reagan won because he understood the Russian threat and how hated they were by their slave states, in time he managed to pull that loose thread and the bloody cage of evil came unraveled, Reagan would not like to see Russia rebuilding its empire today.
Reagan wouldn’t have allowed the victorious West, to rape Russia economically, like Bush and Clinton did. I believe he advocated a “Marshall Plan” to help rebuild the Russian economy.
Reagan would have smilingly done whatever it took to help Russia never become a threat to the world again, if they would accept becoming civilized fine, then he would support that, but he would do what it takes to stop them from doing what they are doing now.
Reagan would never have let them go this far.
Howard Fast was a Communist Party activist that hated Reagan and just made up the claim as one of his anti-Reagan attacks.
