Cool! In the vast universe, there’s always something new to see and learn.

It would be too late for a warning if it had happened yesterday.

(The above is not a statement of fact. It is either opinion, or satire, or both.)

The gamma-ray burst was significantly longer than average, which might normally suggest it had been produced by the collapse of a massive star into a supernova.

So I’m assuming that we were caught out in the penumbra of the blast? Was it a blast from an interstellar object that was extremely far away? I’m just saying this because I thought that Gamma-Ray Bursts were easily capable of being extinction events under a direct hit.

These comparatively rare cosmic events – which normally last far less than a minute – are the result of a collision between two ultra-dense neutron stars. They produce heavier elements such as gold and platinum. Anybody got a spare rocket?

I only took Astronomy 101, so I can’t answer you intelligently.
I thought they were only short in duration, yet extremely powerful.
I’m going to do some looking around.

"What is the effect on us on Earth?".
Journalists interviewed some scientists and then wrote stories about it.
Then folks on internet forums had discussions about it.
Then - after a long pause - the world ended for completely unrelated reasons.

Too bad the gold and platinum didn’t strike earth instead of particles.
