I don’t know why they don’t make them free the day before or right before closing.

It’s because no one would buy anything and they’d wait until the giveaway hour. Then there would be a mob of people trampling and beating on each other to get in on the free stuff.

Some do. Trader Joe's is particularly generous to food pantries.
