The confusion that I had was about the credit cards.   If you use a card, you can't instead use cash.   In the link #9, above it explains the credit cards were not credit cards at all.

Thanks. That’s so slimy. And they bought all those gift cards. Clever crooks. I hope they get caught. There was a recent article about Wal-Mart raising prices because of all the brazen shoplifting. Whether scams like this or shoplifting, the customers pay for it all in the end.
