Digitally scanned photos and digital photography files have not only the bits that make up the pixels of an image that are viewable but also have a store of data called Metadata.
The Meta data has numerous fields that provide information about the image like date taken, camera, geolocation information ( lat, Lon ), lens and camera type and camera settings or scanner settings, etc.
There is one field with in the Metadata thats just for you to fill in information and keywords that are searchable.
So names of people, place etc can all be entered and later searched for. With that information you can search to view particular types of files. For example vacations.
I don’t know the name of the software for Microssoft but I know it’s out there. I use opensource software on Linux.
You are referring perhaps to the "Properties" / "Comments" field?
I find that searching for terms entered into the "Properties" / "Comments" field is not an especially robust ("sure-fire") search method. (When copying files from one platform to another, the program freq. stops and tells me "Can't copy 'Properties!' Copy anyway?" That grinds my gears!)

I think I once heard of this so-called "Linux." I may have also once come across the term "opensource." - That illustrates how "savvy" I am.
I use the built-in search function provided by the "Explorer" (the little yellow folder at the bottom of my computer screen).
It works fine / has never failed me.
