I’m in a never ending state of naming each photo I’ve ever taken—whenever I get some free time, I go in and play the labelling game.
I’ve often had to email my mom or uncle saying “who’s the man standing next to Grandpa?” etc.... “oh that was an old client of his, Milton Greenwald......” etc......
It's very important to establish, early on, a strictly consistent naming convention. Begin with the era: "195x_xx_xx" if you know only that it was in the 1950s. "1959_12_24" if you know that it was taken on Christmas Eve in 1959. Then list (in order of age) the names of the persons appearing in the photo: Last name first, first name last, middle initial. Etc.
Of course, this yields very long file names, like 1959_12_24_SMITH_John_wife_Alice_JONES_Alfred_dog_Rover_Springfield.jpg.
But future historians and archivists will thank you for it! (Actually, you'll find that you, yourself, will also be able to more quickly search for specific photos this way!)
Regards,
