Apparently the director took to Twitter to deny those reports of a female Indiana Jones.

This is a Clinton type denial. All it means is the female will not go by “Indiana” she will have another name.

The rumors I heard (and they are just rumors, is that both young Indiana dies and this means the old Indiana never existed and just fades away while the girl picks up the hat and wipe and the ending scenes are her doing all the iconic action found in the original series.)
