VAIN, SELF-SERVING VANITY: Recommendations on Sirius XM?
Vanity ^ | 11-27-2022 | Vanity

One just stumbled into a trial period of Sirius XM.

Any recommendations?

Astute political/historical/current events talk programs?

New music? Contrast with the same stuff on the FM dial... all genre considered...

Comedy, just for fun, etc, lest one lose one's sense of humor listening to the news?

I've been a Sirius subscriber since almost the beginning, about 20 years ago. Back then it was a major hassle getting it into your car as it was not built in like it is on most all cars today. It was all third party or do-it-yourself installation. The home experience was even worse, as I constantly had to move the antenna on my porch roof around as the earth rotated.

But Internet streaming changed everything and I now stream radio maybe 10 hours a day through either my device or my car. I don't have cable TV so anything I watch or listen to gets streamed.

I use it almost solely for music and I have a number of shows that I stream on demand such as Top 40 shows (70s, 80s, and Country), curated shows by artists like Tom Petty, Eric Church and Bob Dylan.

I guess it's a matter of musical taste in recommending what channels are best but I spent most of my time on Willie's Roadhouse, Spectrum, The Loft, Classic Rewind, Deep Tracks, and the Highway. There are at least another dozen channels that I check out regularly. Nearly 100 channels of commercial free music in just about every genre. Have fun!

I’ve had it about 12 years.

Yes, the ‘normal’ subscription rate is ridiculous. I call a couple days before my annual subscription is expiring and tell them I want to cancel. You HAVE to say you want to cancel or they don’t deal with you. I once said “give me the same deal as last year” and they wouldn’t. You have to threaten to cancel.

I get it for about $120 a year.

Mostly I’m a vintage music guy. A multitude of music channels so you can find what you like. My favorites are weekly programs on the 60’s channel which count down the top 40 songs from the same week in a selected year from the 60’s.

I have music on 10-12 hours a day so easily worth it for me.

They do tend to play the hits but will often delve into songs a bit more obscure which I like a lot.

Besides your car you can also download the app and listen that way on your phone, Easy Peasy. I have a remote blu-tooth speaker for better sound than you phone if you choose to listen w/o ear buds.

Also plays quite reliably on Alexa device.

I have listened to sports in the car on rare occasions. Also comedy but also very rarely. Never news.

There is music for pretty much any taste. Me personally, I listen to Ch33 First Wave (80s New Wave music), Faction Punk(this is stuff you don't hear much of on terrestrial radio--punk rock from today back 45 years or so).

I also listen to Dr. Laura a lot on Triumph 111. Makes me feel good that I am not as screwed up as a lot of people, LOL.

With fees, I'm paying around $7 a month. It is like the "Music and Talk" package. No pro sports included. I would like the MLB, but I can get Cubs, White Sox, Twins, Cards, and Royals over the air, so don't really need SXM for baseball.

Everybody seems to associate Howard Stern with Sirius/XM but despite being a 20 year subscriber, I’ve never once heard him.

I second that. Andrew Wilkow from 12-3 M-F.

Do it.

Don’t get it. It’s becoming the cable of radio. I was paying $20 a month just for the news and talk channels (I basically only listened to the Patriot Channel anyway). It’s one of those expenses I had to get rid of thanks to Biden’s crappy economy.

I've even listened to Sonnie Johnson on Saturdays for the conservative black opinion.

I subscribe to it. Although I am going to revisit my subscription.

Really like the Blues Channel and the Patriot Channel.

There are a couple conservative talk channels. I think one is 125(?)

They have both Fox and Fox business which I listen to.

They have just about every music genre. There are a ton of channels…I listen to about 8 of them.

I do like their Christmas channels.

Spend a few minutes on their site and check them out. I spend a lot of time in my truck…so I like it. By reading some of the posts here…it’s not everyone’s cup of tea.

I’m still trying to figure out all the bells and whistles on my new car. Sirius is at the bottom of my list. I learned I can play podcasts from my cellphone using bluetooth. That’s good enough for me.

but I would seek out OTR (old time radio)

Sirius-XM has such a channel..channel 148. I've had SXM for years and it is a delight. So much content besides music. I would recommend it highly. Use the app on your phone with some nice bluetooth speakers like these and enjoy.

Sooner...all the things you list are a available on SXM. And then some.

I’m cheap. I like freebies.

I’ve already got Amazon Prime, and with that I get Amazon Music (basic) for free, which gives me all I need in the form of music to listen to in the car via bluetooth connection with my phone. If I want talk, I’ve got podcasts I download and listen to, also for free.

There isn’t a lot of good talk radio. The conservative hosts are just ok.The shock radio hosts aren’t good. If you like Old Time radio shows from before the 1960s, then that channel is good.

XM148 is one of the channels I listen to.

Our Miss Brooks is probably my favorite radio comedy.
