“That girl” isn’t even a pronoun. He didn’t substitute a pronoun for the girl’s preferred pronoun. He used an adjective and noun combo.

Yep.

I learned pronoun supremacy in 7th grade, over 60 years ago.

We wrangled every part of speech, diagramed sentences, and punctuated and capitalized collections of words into submission.

It stuck. Today I come to a screeching halt when reading the newspaper and its and it’s are improperly used.

‘They’ used as a singular pronoun just muddles ‘their’ communication; I have to stop and unravel before proceeding.
