The driver, Nicholas Joseph Gutierrez, 22, is now charged with attempted murder of a peace officer and other charges are pending, the sheriff’s department said.

Bond was set at $2 million.

Security camera video obtained by KTLA shows the SUV veering into the opposite lanes of travel and directly into a group of 75 recruits from the STARS Center Academy who were jogging on Mills Avenue around 6:30 a.m. The vehicle stopped after hitting a light pole.

A total of 25 recruits were injured, five of them critically.

The recruits immediately rendered aid to their injured colleagues while they waited for paramedics to arrive.

On Crime Stories they had a rerun today of the true crime case of Clifford Sleigh who abducted, raped and murdered a little girl playing in her own front yard next to a girl friend in September, 1992 in Canada. Was also a topic of Most Wanted and got some good clues from that at the time.

First neighbors who saw someone said he was “dark skinned.” But actually not even Latino, it turned out, an Indian (called a “native”——as they called him then.
Convicted and in prison and passed being up for parole as he was denied parole, thank goodness.

So who knows what this monster will turn out to be. A shame police aren’t saying more unless they have secrecy motives such as a crime scene clue only the killer would know about-—but asking for the public to help them out today is a very bad sign.

Heinlein would propose that this crine be “balanced” by taking him to the exact spot and running HIM over with a car. Preferably his own.

I read the blood test for alcohol was negative. I wonder what he might have been on and does it take longer to show up in blood tests.

“Back in the day, all we really had to worry about was ‘Jody’ stealing the girl that we left back home.”

“Jody” is a gender-neutral name, It can work with many variables.

Death penalty for this maggot. Multiple police recruits have life changing injuries. And/or will be recovering for months and months. Broken legs, knees, ankles are no fun.

One report said that limbs were torn from some of the recruits. I have no idea if they were able to reattach any of them. A doctor(?) said that some of the recruits were put in the squad cars that were with the runners and transported directly to the hospital - and probably their lives were saved by doing that so quickly.

It appears that if he hadn’t hit that light pole, there would have been many more casualties.
