Interesting. The Frankfurt School members in the US appeared to be clinically depressed individuals. They would ware heavy wool suits and overcoats in southern California in the middle of the summer. They were constantly visibly unhappy men who intensely disliked the country that offered them refuge and endlessly complained how that the US was not Germany. Many German refugees in California behaved in the opposite. Walter Klempener (whose son is remembered as Col Klink of Hogan’s Heroes fame) the symphony conductor made it very clear he had absolutely no interest in returning to Germany, a country that wanted to kill him, from spring like California where he made far more money directing motion picture symphonies or scoring film music than he could imagine directing an orchestra in Europe.
They were marxists who wished for Germany to be a socialist paradise. They got the Nazi’s instead so some of them came here and continued beating the drum.
