If they do, it'll do for them what the Vietnam War did for LBJ, popularity-wise. He sank historically low in the polls and declined to run in 1968. A few years after leaving office, he died as a drunken hermit on his ranch, reportedly neglecting to bathe, cut his hair etc.
LBJ was deeply hurt by the voters' rejection because (it appears from this distance) he was a malignant narcissist, who had participated in many, many serious crimes including multiple murders and a coup d'etat.
The reason I point this out is because I am wondering about some of the current crop of RAT criminals. The one good thing I can say about LBJ, psychologically, is that his evidently deep depression at the end indicates he may not have been a pure sociopath. Sociopaths who lack the empathy gene are very untroubled. They don't get depressed. The don't exhibit neurotic behavior. They don't experience guilt. They just lie a lot, though some can achieve high standing in various professions. Think Bill, Hillary and Joe Braindead. (So I'm not counting on them ever feeling remorse.) LBJ, at least (maybe), wasn't like them. As another reference point; he was, according to some, a very unpleasant fellow. But he was not accused of being a chameleon.
The one derp that I suspect may be capable of remorse is Hunter Biden. This would explain his extreme risk taking and negligence which almost makes it seem he would like to get caught and bring down The Big Guy with him. (So that's a whole different psychology. I will leave it to the Freudians to figure out.)
