Well my parents as their parents were poor as they were growing up and always had huge vegetable gardens and bought meat from the local butcher and kept loads of food in their freezers.

My point is,they never bought processed food or even access to it back in the day.
They either farmed it ,raised it or did without.

Today we get so much additives in our food.
We just don't keep it simple nor does the government want us too.

My Grandparents lived a long life without serious ailments and my parents still cook fresh without too much fast foods.
Meat is good for us just like veggies,its the additives they put in to keep a longer shelf life that may be the problem.
