I wouldn’t be surprised to hear the attacker had a “medical episode” in jail, passed away, and is no longer available to answer questions in order to determine a motive.

The two were witnessed by the SFPD officers for a while before deciding to enter the house. The press conference by the police who said they were in charge of the investigation said both men had hammers and that the police dispatcher sent them to a wellness check. At no time was a burglary, break-in, or assault reported. The assault was observed between both men by the local police.
