Can’t say I’ve read any reports in the western media explaining exactly what motivated Putin to invade. Only statements like “Putin started it”. But what was his reasoning? We’ve invaded sovereign nations, so I guess there must be some valid reasons.
But remember our government and media would never lie to us.

We did present some reasons to the UN for several years. WMD, killing of Kurds with poison gas, invading Kuwait and getting pushed out...
And yet, eliminating Saddam led directly to ISIS. Who would have thought replacing an evil, brutal dictator could lead to something even worse? Without Saddam harshly stifling religious zealots it got much, much worse.
And as it turned out, Saddam kept the notion of WMD to pump up his reputation, but actually didn't have what we thought he did. George Tenet's "Slam dunk" was a dud.
Very often valid reasons turn out to be invalid... Or lead to unintended consequences.
Both the USA and Russia could benefit from that idea.
But remember our government and media would never lie to us.
AND that applies to the Chinese govt and media, Russia's, Ukraine's, nearly every website, Youtube video or podcast nowadays.
The same for Vax vs Antivax. So much information, so little trust in any of it.
We are adrift in a sea of propaganda where NOTHING is the truth and everything is a lie.
It is incredibly disheartening.
Especially when we attack each other over these lies from all sides.
Your lie versus my lie.

Shoot, now I'm getting too deep.
I'm just gonna enjoy Scott Adams' humor!
Seriously?? I mean, whether you agree with those explanations or not, they've been made ad nauseum pretty much everywhere. In short, Putin invaded Ukraine because he 1) resents and regrets the dissolution of the Soviet Union at the end of the Cold War, and 2) wants to reconstitute the Former Soviet Union's component parts into a larger "Great Russia". He views Ukraine as being a fake country with no independent history, and properly a part of Russia itself. He started this war to make that happen.
That general explanation for the war has been repeated inumerable times.
