Puccini and Andrew Lloyd Webber fell into the same trap. Their early operas, such as "La Boheme" and "Jesus Christ Superstar," showed composers who were profligate with their melodic material. Both operas have a lot of "commercial" numbers. As they matured, both composers limited themselves to one commercial hit per opera.

"Nessun dorma" was the one commercial hit from "Turandot," Puccini's last opera, from 1924 which he left unfinished. In his mature operas, there is a big buildup in the orchestra for the big commercial number. He telegraphs his punch. But in "Turandot," Puccini lets the aria materialize out of nothing. It comes as a shock to the audience. It's one of the greatest tenor arias ever written.

Now I'm going to have to learn Italian

I thought my WWII MP dad, as gentle as he was

removed most if not all of my "feelings"

but apparently some still remain intact

to give me goose bumps

Nessun dorma was also the song being sung in a Mission Impossible movie during an attempt on the life of the Chancellor of Austria.

I don’t know if that has anything to do with Trump using it or not.
