Amazon’s woke (and boring) reimagining of J.R.R. Tolkien’s Rings universe is bleeding viewers when it should be snowballing.
According to the far-left Hollywood Reporter, “The Rings of Power had 988 million minutes of viewing time in the United States from Sept. 12 to 18, per Nielsen (the show’s fourth episode debuted Sept. 16). That’s a decline of about 18 percent from the previous week’s 1.2 billion minutes.”
That’s a big decline, especially when Amazon is releasing new episodes every week. When a streamer dumps an entire season at one time, it makes sense for the show to decline in intensity as the weeks’ pass. Rings of Power is losing viewers when it should be gaining viewers. At the very least, if the show was any good (it’s not), the same number of viewers should be tuning in. Instead, people appear to be giving up. What Amazon was really hoping for here, which is why Amazon spent a billion — with a “B” — to produce this boondoggle, was a cultural phenomenon, a game-changer…
*snip*
Critics gushed over Rings, but who trusts those rent-seekers anymore?
The backlash against Rings from the public reminds me of what happened to the Star Wars films. And we all know what happened to those.
Amazon has committed to five seasons of Rings. I suggest it start firing some people and hire mature, experienced (including in the real world) storytellers.
When the analysts are falling asleep…
Amazon can attack us as racist, attack us as sexist, and hide bad reviews, but it can’t make us watch.
These smug, insulting shows deserve to tank.

I’ve watched the entire first season. Disappointing but bearable. Hoping they will learn their lessons and can salvage it.
I don’t think the woke aspects such as pushing racial diversity are so bad as the problem of poor storytelling.
Introducing racial diversity with things like a black elf who is a major character is fine IF it makes sense for the story. Instead, this just seems tacked on and becomes a distraction from the story. There is no explanation for how there happens to be a mixture of ethnicities within races such as elves or harfoots.
But this is a minor issue. Even if there were zero distractions with efforts for diversity and inclusivity and multiculturalism, the story has so far been fairly lackluster.
One thing I’m glad about is the tone is fairly consistent with Tolkien. There’s been little or no profanity, and no gratuitous sex and nudity. Many feared that Amazon would try to turn this into another “Game of Thrones,” which even leftwing media called porn.
I like the use of songs, and it is fitting for a Tolkien-based story. The relationship between elves and dwarves is well-developed and felt a lot more like Peter Jackson’s interpretation of Tolkien. I’m still hopeful for future seasons being worthwhile.
I dropped my prime account years ago and will never go back to that communist owned company.
“At the same time, I don’t see the wokeness.”
Galadriel, Warrior Princess? Always right Galadriel? All men relegated to the role of bumbling fools? Heck, the greatest Numenorean warrior of all time, Elendil, can’t even lift a beam unless a short woman helps him!
Meanwhile,....Galadriel jumps into the ocean to swim a thousand miles. With her dress on. Slaughters a troll after it whips the male elves. Stands face to face with a volcano and doesn’t even get a sunburn!
And then there are the homicidal hobbits. Elrond and Durin have a bromance. Galadriel and Elrond BOTH concealing Sauron’s true identity, after Sauron proposes to Galadriel.
And that DREK rates 3.5 out of 5?

The actors do not look the part. They look like a local production that cast anyone around.
Now onto Picard! .... wait, Lost in Space! ... wait Star Trek Discovery! ... no wait.
Back to Stargate SG-1 and Atlantis on Pluto TV.
I think they shoot aliens.
It’s a fantasy. Fantasy writers have characters with fantastic abilities. Supergirl, wonder woman, catgirl were all around before wokeness. So, a fantasy female being skilled is not new at all.
For reality check out Sidney Mclaughlin.
“Fantasy writers have characters with fantastic abilities.”
Tolkien’s world didn’t HAVE Superman. NOTHING about “Middle Earth” had any suggestion any Elf could swim across an ocean. Or be hit by a 500’ tall wall of lava and just shrug it off!
If they wanted to make a Marvel movie, they could. But defecating on a world Tolkien spent decades building just because the writers didn’t give a rat’s rear end about anything is evil.
I always hated the Superman comics, even as a little kid. How can you care about someone whose answer for every problem is a new super power? The Hobbit and the Lord of the Rings were very different. Gandalf couldn’t fly around the world. An elf shot in the right spot with an arrow DIES. They had horses and ships because they needed them. They needed an alliance of men and elves because neither was strong enough to win a war against Sauron without each other - AND without tremendous sacrifice and loss!
I’ve never gone to see a “superpower” movie. Never will. Not all fantasy involves flying people with X-Ray vision and bulletproof bodies.
The storyline sucked donkey dicks! The dialog was hideous. “Do you know why a stone sinks? It looks down!” Just STUPID.
It was written by Twitter people. Want to get something done? USE ALL CAPS! When in doubt, scream and act like a spoiled 3 year old. It was just garbage writing by people who have never faced any real problems. You can tell none of those involved have ever been in a real fight, ever been in the military or a cop or trained a horse or done anything outside complain to the manager about their fashion-coffee being off.
Tolkien’s fantasy worked, and has been loved for 60+ years, because it was both fantasy and real. Rings of Power is a Marvel comic. Nothing more and maybe even a little less.
Yep. It is Marvelish. It doesn’t follow the silmarillion or any other tolien writings that I know of.
But, blame the heirs. They’re the one who sold the franchise.

On 13 November 2017, Amazon acquired the global television rights to The Lord of the Rings, committing to a multi-season television series titled The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power. It will feature stories that are set in the Second Age.[16] Amazon said the deal included potential for spin-off series as well.[17] The press release referred to “previously unexplored stories based on J.R.R. Tolkien’s original writings”. Amazon will be the producer in conjunction with the Tolkien Estate and The Tolkien Trust, HarperCollins and New Line Cinema.[18]***
