Sam’s mom, maybe? There aren’t that many dukes left.
First off, this was in 1962. As far as I know, there was no Duke. The title belonged to Sam’s mother. And Sam was being groomed to be the next Duchess. Remember the Duchess was the one who was royalty-adjacent.
Second, the Duchess’ late husband, Sam’s father, was an RAF officer and pilot who was killed in a plane crash when Sam was 4. Sam’s stepfather was Consul General to Colombia, which is why they were there.
When I kind of sarcastically asked Sam if she lived in a castle, she said they had 3 estates, but only one was really a castle.
What I didn’t know at the time was that I’m royalty-adjacent also. My father’s mother, Sara Jane Parr, who was born in England, was a direct descendent of Sir Thomas Parr, father of Catherine Parr, the sixth and last wife of Henry VIII.
And Sir Thomas was a direct descendent of Edward III.
