Iran is not the Islamic Republic, and Iranians are not “the regime.”

Iran is an ancient nation, a civilization, a homeland, and a people with thousands of years of history. The Islamic Republic is the authoritarian political system imposed on Iran since 1979. When discussing terrorism, repression, nuclear threats, or regional aggression, name the Islamic Republic, the IRGC, or the regime—not “Iran” or “Iranians.” A clear majority of Iranians oppose the regime, and many have paid for that resistance with their freedom and their lives. This is not merely a semantic distinction. It is the difference between a nation and the regime occupying it.

“We'll bomb our own territory and people if it's occupied.”

That's the message from Iranian Army spokesperson Brig. Gen. Mohammad Akrami-Nia, who laid out a fanatical doctrine under which the regime would rather destroy parts of Iran than allow them to fall into American hands. The Islamic Republic's massacre of 45,000 Iranians in January showed exactly how little it values Iranian lives. To this regime, the people are expendable and its survival is all that matters.
