Electric vehicles are exploding from water damage after Hurricane Ian, top Florida official warns

A top Florida state official warned Thursday that firefighters have battled a number of fires caused by electric vehicle (EV) batteries waterlogged from Hurricane Ian.

EV batteries that have been waterlogged in the wake of the hurricane are at risk of corrosion, which could lead to unexpected fires, according to Jimmy Patronis, the state's top financial officer and fire marshal.

"There’s a ton of EVs disabled from Ian. As those batteries corrode, fires start," Patronis tweeted Thursday. "That’s a new challenge that our firefighters haven’t faced before. At least on this kind of scale."

"It takes special training and understanding of EVs to ensure these fires are put out quickly and safely," he continued in a follow-up tweet. "Thanks to [North Collier Fire Rescue] for their hard work."

Patronis published a video of firefighters in Naples, Florida, battling a fire started from a Tesla EV's battery. A bystander is overheard in the video saying that the crew had used hundreds of gallons of water attempting to put the fire out.

Last week, Hurricane Ian pummeled cities along Florida's west coast including Naples and Fort Myers, making landfall as a Category 4 storm. The hurricane caused more than 100 deaths and over a million residents to lose power.

It is unclear how many EVs were impacted or destroyed by the storm.

Meanwhile, consumers are increasingly turning to EVs as the Biden administration continues to push a green transition involving zero-emission cars.

Between April and June, EVs accounted for 5.6% of new car purchases in the U.S., up slightly from the first three months of 2022, according to Kelley Blue Book.

Is that Jose Biden and his buddy, the Mayor of Fort Myers, evaluating the hurricane damage?

they dont care

notice that they dont care that windmills are chopping up birds

they dont care because it is not about EVs

it is about banning gas cars

the grid will never be able to handle the number of EVs necessary to replace the number of gas cars on the road

and as they go to “green energy” it will be so expensive only the rich and powerful will be able to afford personal transportation

the masses will be on the bus

this is not about EVs

it is about control

Yay for the draught here in SoCal! Otherwise the Teslas would blow us all up on the freeways.

My parents love Captain Andersons.
In June 1973, they cut their Honeymoon short by one night so they could go to Captain Andersons for a second time before heading back home to Memphis.
They didn’t have enough money to hit up Captain Andersons twice and stay the final night in the hotel so they went back home a little early.

“ Meanwhile, consumers are increasingly turning to EVs as the Biden administration continues to push a green transition involving zero-emission cars.”

I drive an EV but I call BS on that line.

5-6% of car sales is not “increasingly turning” and Biden’s puppeteers are not much motivation.

BTW, watch out for ICE cars that had been submerged as well. That’s a normal scam.

With the exception of dry-cell single-cell batteries, most multi-cell batteries are susceptible to Thermal Runaway. Lithium-Ion Batteries are unique to most multi-cell batteries in a number of ways. One of those unique characteristics is they are unusually prone to EXPLODING. Two, when they catch fire, which can happen at any time, often while simply parked with no obvious catalyst. Occasions of parked EVs spontaneously catching fire while parked are not uncommon.
In summary, EV’s are dangerous, unreliable, and far inferior to any ICE vehicle from a bang-for-the-buck perspective when equivalent performance is a criteria.
But, if Virtue Signalling your Wokeness is a priority EV’s are the current in thing.

I have seen ice vehicles catch fire/explode while running...

Or when filling up because idiots are smoking...

I have not seen them catch fire 3am cold in the garage all by themselves.

The extreme unpredictability of the bms’s or quality of the battery packs make this happen. If it was a normal type of fire, even, you could extinguish it with normal a/b/c fire extinguishers, but you can’t stop the fire once these start.
