The BBC Maigret series with Michel Gambon and the next more recent version with Rowan Atkinsonturn are pretty good but Cremer owns the character like David Suchet owns Poirot.

DEATH IN PARADISE is absolutely top drawer!
It takes place on a fictional Caribbean Island. The entire police force is black, but a rotating cast ( I guess each one left the show and so was replaced by a NEW character of white guys, from the UK, take the chief of police role. Each white guy has his own foibles/likes/dislikes/ idiosyncrasies, which is a real hoot!
Killers, victims, rest of the cast have been black, white, mixed, natives to the island, tourists, you name it. It can be spooky, funny, irrelevant...you name it.

Danger UXB is another series worth viewing.
Piece of Cake, if you can find it is great.
Battle of Britain with outstanding aerial scenes.
City Homicide (AU) is a good older series, not too dated.

For foreign language series, you cannot beat “Salamander” and “Before We Die”. I just finished binge watching both of these and was totally engrossed!
Shetland is also an excellent series if its streaming. Murdoch Mysteries is a long-running Canadian series, as well as British series Midsomer Murders, although I’ve never watched either of them. The detective series Vera, as well as Unforgotten are two more excellent British series. One thing the British do very well is murder mysteries.

Blakes 7, Callan, The Professionals. Loved Dr Who until it went woke, then I went bye bye. Also love the vicar shows. Was more interested in Lewis and Endeavour than in Morse, though I bought all of Morse, too.
Currently watching Chinese and Korean the way I used to watch the British series. I had always bought the DVDs for the British shows, but now I just subscribe to viki.com and iq.com because they’re so cheap. Since I used to have to put subtitles on for the British shows, it’s not a big deal to always have subtitles on for Chinese and Korean.

Whitechapel is a different twist with modern killings based on old Brit Classic murderers/crimes like Jack the Ripper.

Especially Miss Fisher’s Murder Mysteries. Alas it was cancelled [AU]. The period clothing, cars, settings, etc. are wonderfully done.
Another show I love is Doc Martin.

Longmire was the last one I viewed. Followed it from A&E to Netflix. Recently I viewed “Dark Winds,” an AMC series via streaming. The series is based on Navajo police characters Lieutenant Joe Leaphorn, and Deputy Jim Chee from Tony Hillerman’s book series which exclusively features the two men. I read all the books until Hillerman passed, then tried reading his daughter’s continuation of the series, but I didn’t care for them. The TV series wasn’t bad, but if you read any the books, you’d know they tweaked the main characters, along with their family lives, native-american beliefs, among other things. PBS did a series of three movies in 2002, featuring the Joe Leaphorn/Jim Chee characters. Wes Studi played Joe Leaphorn, and Adam Beach played Jim Chee. The movies were more in line with the books. In the new TV series, they have Zahn McClarnon playing Leaphorn, and Kiowa Gordon as Chee. McClarnon is a familiar face from the Longmire series, and Reservation Dogs (Hulu). McClaron played a cop is both of those series. The Dark Winds series has been picked up for a second season.
Wallander.

Broadchurch & Hidden. First two seasons of both are great, the third seasons are kind of average, but worth watching.

Mystery Road (Australia) is good, the series with Judy Davis is great, the other series and related movies are ok.

“New Tricks” and “Waking the Dead”. Both entertaining, has good humor, strong casts, good plot lines, and edginess.

“Magpie Murders.” It is supposed to air on PBS starting Sunday, October 16th. I highly recommend it. Lesley Manville stars in it. She was recently in a police drama series titled “Sherwood,” and will be playing Princess Margaret in Netflix’s “Crown” this season. She was also in “World on Fire,” a drama that takes place during WWII. The first season aired on PBS, and it was renewed for a second season, but that won’t occur until 2023. The first season initially aired in 2019. Hope I’m still alive to watch the second season. Lesley Manville will also be in the Starz Channel’s period drama titled “Dangerous Liaisons” that airs November 6th.

Another program she was in that might not be for everyone’s taste is BBC2/Hulu’s “Harlots.” I liked it because it took place in Georgian (18th Century) London. It was inspired by the book “The Covent Garden Ladies” by Hallie Rubenhold, who also acted as historical advisor to the show.
One of my favorites are Lindsey Davis’s Falco series.

I liked Grantchester, I never knew that a vicar could have such a great sex life plus be a freelance detective.

Matthew Bartholomew series by Susanna Gregory. Bartholomew is a teacher of Medicine at Michaelhouse, part of the fledgling University of Cambridge. “Brother Michael is believed to be a Benedictine monk with a vast knowledge and love related to intrigue, good food, and politics. Together, Matthew Bartholomew and Brother Michael try to fight against the criminal activities taking place in the city.”

Try the French TV version of Maigret with Bruno Cremer as Superintendent Maigret.

The subtitles are clear, the stories are entertaining and there’s none of the self righteous merde American TV shovels out.

Saw Whitechapel years ago when it originally aired. I love Rupert Penry-Jones. The character of Edward Buchan, historian, was played by Steve Pemberton, who also starred in and helped write “The League of Gentlemen” tv series with Mark Gattis, and Reece Shearsmith. All three play various characters in the show. It’s labeled comedy/horror. Pemberton and Shearsmith also write and produce “Inside No. 9, which consists of different half-hour crime/drama/comedy episodes each week. The 7th season of the series aired this year.

K-dramas are harder than C-dramas. More intrigue. Large number center on corruption with the good guys dead against it. Willing to show grubby. More drinking than you ever believed possible, with drunkenness being considered “cute.” But good guys are really good and fight against the bad guys. Christmas trees everywhere.
C-dramas avoid the seamy side of life and show the skyscrapers or very clean poorer areas. Admittedly, the smog is so bad it’s hard to see the city through the high rise windows, but... A little more propaganda, but actually very little. Their rah rah China easily parallels the 50’s rah rah U.S. I couldn’t use up the fingers of one hand at the mentions of communism. It’s just not talked about. EVERYONE seems to be religious, just in their own traditional style. A very few atheists.

Cannot wait to see the endings. I bought the entire 3 series and love it. I plan on watching the whole when I can get the last!

Both series are some of the best written, produced, casted, and acted TV I have ever seen.

I’ve never been able to bring myself to watch the last episode of Morse.

Not sure about Endeavour yet. I may have to resort to spoilage.

My dad John Thaw cried watching Morse die on screen... after acting in the hit series' prequel I can understand why
