SEE IT: Stunning photo captured from ISS shows ancient lava flow in US desert

The reason ‘they’ named it was because it looks like a black ship in a vast sea (of NM dirt and grass). The plain is flat, so the lava dikes are mysterious looking to those who do not know the origin.

Thanks for this pic and post Red Badger. It is interesting to compare this photo with the Google maps photo. Both have their strong points. Using the Google photos, you can trace the flow to its final end to the south, just off the image from the satellite that you posted.

Oh dear! If you scroll further from it, you can see it struggling to get back up. Eventually, another vehicle comes by and stops by it. It’s hard to tell whether the donkey eventually gets up, or if that’s a man standing where it was, but you can eventually see a figure standing in the dust caused by the 2nd vehicle.
