I view my dogs as partners and part of my family too, but if I shoot a cop trying to shoot my dog I'm guessing things won't turn out the same. This actually happened not far from here, and the guy who shot the cop went away to the big house for a long time. (Cops were investigating a call in the neighborhood, entered his property, shot his dog for no good reason, so he shot them).

We either live by the same set of rules or we don't. If their dogs are equal to human lives and they can shoot to protect them, then we citizens should have the same right. If they can shoot a criminal who attacks them and not get locked up, then we should have the same right. One standard for us all.

We don’t. Trained police dogs are given special status as a result, other dogs are not. But you knew this.
