I understood from somewhere that those voids had contained sand while the Pyramid was being built to keep the entrance open and when they closed the Pyramid after the burial, the sand was allowed to pour out which enabled counter weighted doors to close.   Was that just a theory?   If so, it seems like a good one.

Never heard that one. Exterior doors were mostly closed from inside. The one at ground level (see the link below) was sealed from outside.
