The Russian gas company Gazprom owns a majority share of both pipelines. They were designed and built by string of different companies.

Nord Stream 2 was complete but never certified and so had no gas flowing through it. Nord Stream 1 consists of two 48" pipes about 476 miles in length. Even with no NG being pumped in by Russia, a significant amount would still remain in the pipeline. A rough back of the envelope yields a pipeline volume of 31,582,807 ft3. A 20-lb propane tank is about 2 ft3.

Do you suppose they pressurized NS-2 to prevent ingress of water, and to detect leaks? I mean, filling the pipe with saltwater can’t be good for it.
