I’m assuming that the GPS no longer functions under water. Other guidance system, perhaps? If only 1 plane, then triangulation can’t be used. Perhaps a marker was placed on the pipe prior.
I don’t know how good positioning systems work - I know that the pipe was stationary but I don’t know what technology is available that would allow the torpedo to pinpoint a specific location.
I’m half speculating here - lots of coincidences surrounding the whole affair.

If they had a PIG running through the pipeline, could that have provided enough magnet field for a special warhead to track and target it?
More of a technology question I guess, since knowing if a PIG was moving in the pipeline is unknowable at this time.
