Pure water is so precious. DH has a portable Katadyn filter as well but has not had any need for it.

The initial outlay of $ for Berks is well worth it in my view; filters last a long long time, did for us. Can be scrubbed. We have the old white ones.

LJ, the white ones are to filter out fluoride. The black ones are the good ones who filter out the ick.

This discussion made me think that even tho I’m on a 228’ deep well, it might be a good idea to replace the filters.

LOL, I “requested” DH to buy me one for Christmas one year (1998), he told me it’s the most he ever spent on me! After he died and I moved here, I hauled water for 2 years, so the Berky was used all the time.

Then, after the well was finally put in, I still used the Berky cos I didn’t trust the water...sometimes it smelled (not rotten egg, just “off”). (Was my water coming from China? my well is about 4 times as deep as my country neighbors.) Did that for about 2 years and decided what’s the worst the water can do, give me cancer?? HA! I already had cancer, so put the Berkey away. But, in typical Mom fashion, I feel obligated to have it on hand should any of the youngers need it.

So I looked on Amazon and the Berkey blacks are hella expensive! Like, $175!. But, another company makes the same thing for under 40 bucks. Yeah, I’m gonna get those.
