Nope - real trains. There’s a spot in Berea, Ohio, where the Norfolk Southern and CSX railroad mainlines run parallel - even a seldom-used crossover track there. Train watchers are almost always there. We saw 5 or 6 trains in the short time we were there - including one long coal train, and a train full of tanker cars.
He has the advantage of having the Wheeling & Lake Erie railroad tracks near his home and he gets a lot of railroad stuff going there.
I have no real tips on model railroading, other than N gauge is, by far, the most space-efficient, since it’s the smallest. I have a modest collection of Lionel train stuff, mostly packed away in storage. I don’t know where I would go to purchase railroad stuff, but it is still out there.
