If you want to get into model railroading again, after 50 years, I wouldn’t recommend N scale. Yes, it’s tiny, but if you want stuff that isn’t junk, it’s not going to be any cheaper.
It’s also not very user friendly for old eyes and fingers. Yes, I have some.
I would recommend getting an Atlas or Kato starter set. Bachmann is junk, and I’m dubious about the other manufacturers.
Personally, while it would take up more space, I think that HO scale is much more user friendly, and often cheaper.
