Here’s an article about the crash. The version in this article and in others I’ve read is that Neilia Biden had packed the kids into the car to go buy a Christmas tree. She pulled out into an intersection ahead of tractor-trailer and was subsequently broad-sided. She was deemed at fault, as she had the Stop sign.

OK, good dig. Thanks for the link. It doesn't mention where Joe was at the time most likely DC so maybe she did have to go out and find a tree to purchase. My mom used to load us kids up to go get a tree back in the 60's, too.
