Ginger Baker and Charlie Watts were great JAZZ drummers, not great rock drummers. Ringo Starr, aka “The Man Who Saved Rock and Roll” was the FIRST Rock and Roll Drummer. Before Starr, there were jazz drummers, R & B drummers and Pop drummers.
The common trait between Baker, Watts and Starr was their incredible time keeping. They were like human metronomes. I once read the studio logs of Beatle records out of like 350 mistakes during a song, 8 were Starr’s.
