It’s advice to writers to get rid of an unnecessary words, characters, side plots, sentences, etc. that the writer may have worked hard to create (and fell in love with) but that must be removed for the sake of the overall story.
In the context of factual reporting, it means to edit a piece objectively, even ruthlessly, without sentiment. “Just the facts, ma’am.”
Great advice but it’s an expression that I think will soon fall out of use...woke-ism and all. Got your attention, though!
