I have heard that they don’t like strong odors and some have suggested using Irish Spring soap placed at intervals around the garden.
I've heard that too. Planting fragrant spices like basil may work. Marigolds are another option, but the deer will eat anything if hungry enough.

In the summer, there are plenty of other food sources. There should theoretically be no reason for the deer to go after veggies surrounded by fragrant plants.
But then again, they’re deer.
