Adjusting for “inflation”...
$30/hr ≅ $20/hr (1964 is baseline...20 cents/ pint of Schlitz in a local bar)
When I was pumping gas, cleaning windshields and checking oil making the minimum wage, $1.65 an hour, regular gasoline was $0.19.9 per gallon. Nineteen and nine tenths of a penny.
What is it today? In that part of the country the average price for regular unleaded is $5.39. The minimum wage is now $17.00 per hour.
The math: in 1965, an hour at minimum wage would buy 8 gallons of gasoline. In 2022, the same hour at minimum wage will only buy 3 gallons. Make your own conclusions.
I love Schlitz!
