When I find myself getting depressed or angry I switch off the news for a time. It’s why I don’t post here every day.

I second the suggestion of attending AA. Are there any family members, friends, neighbors, coworkers who can support you in your sobriety journey? That can make a huge difference. You never stop being an alcoholic but if you surround yourself with good people who build you up you won’t need to find comfort in a bottle as much. I’m praying for you.

Yep, switch off the news. That comes before all the rest. The depression feeds on bad news. The wolf you feed, gets stronger.

Medication is likely to add a problem or two, rather than fix existing ones.

A new hobby, a new friend, a new path. A reset. We are all creatures of habit and sometimes you need to change your habits, so deep are the grooves in the old ones, it’s hard to see out, to climb out of them. Before you fall into them each morning, take some time to dig a new path.

At youtube there are prayer videos, gentle voices reading the scriptures, passages about hope or healing or fighting anxiety. They run in long loops and can be 8 hours long. Put one on before you go to bed.

Set aside half an hour every day for exercise...walking, swimming, yoga...for 30 min a day, be some kind of health nut.

Habits feed off each other too. If you smoke, start smoking only while doing something else that you can easily give up later. For instance, only smoke in one room that you rarely enter, while playing solitaire or doing crossword puzzles. After a while your brain associates them. Then one day you don’t go in that room. Nail it shut if you must, to make it less accessible. If you’re not in there playing cards, you probably won’t crave smokes. Do something else instead. And in a few days, your smoking habit lets go of you.
If politics is making you crazy, avoid it. There are more interesting things to be crazy about, anyway.
You probably live in a community. Go out and explore it. Meet your neighbors. Check out local activities.
The great reset begins with the individual. Change self first, then the world.
