The argument about using the Bomb to reduce the loss of civilian life doesn't hold up under scrutiny; it's an ex post facto argument, as Japanese civilians were considered fair game before the Bomb was even built.

(We had been dropping incendiaries on Japanese cities for months before August of 1945.)
