BRITTNEY GRINER SENTENCED TO 9 YEARS IN PRISON AFTER BEING FOUND GUILTY ON DRUG CHARGES IN RUSSIA

Brittney Griner was found guilty of drug charges in a Russian court on Thursday. Shortly after being found guilty, she was sentenced to nine years in Russian prison. The prosecution was reportedly seeking nine and a half years.

Griner is being used as a political pawn. Now, with the sentencing, it forces the hand of President Joe Biden to do something sooner rather than later and get the American citizen out of Russian prison.

The American justice system is far from perfect, but this outrageous sentencing should put things into perspective for everyone, including LeBron James, about how unjust other justice systems around the world operate.

America is attempting to trade the Merchant of Death Viktor Bout for the American basketball star, but it’s unclear if that’s going to happen or not.

Immediately after the sentencing, Biden released a statement saying “Russia is wrongfully detaining” Griner.

I’m reminded of the 19 year old boy who thought it was a good idea to vandalize cars with spray paint in Singapore, and got a caning for his trouble.

FJB: I hereby pardon Brittney for all crimes

White House: Um Joe you can’t pardon her for crimes committed abroad

I keep hearing that this sentence is an outrage, that it’s because Griner is an American, because Griner is black, because Griner is trans, because of the Uke war and on and on.

How different is Griner’s sentence than those of other foreign nationals of any color, sex or whatever for the same crime? Is Russia normally a pushover for drug crimes when those factors are not part of the case?

Try to get purple hair Me-Again Rappinho to go bust her out, lock ‘em both up together. They’d like that.

She’s not going to have much quiet time. She’ll be too busy working in the penal colony she’s being spent off to.

Well, after reading 80 comments, I find myself on the opposite side once again. (Are you sure this wasn’t about vaccines? Just kidding.)

Bring her back through diplomatic means and then try to impress upon her the difference between the United States and Russia. If possible. The very act of bringing her home should be enough, but be sure to mention the Constitution.

It’s not outdated. It will never be outdated. Try to make her see that. We allowed her to kneel for the national anthem. Russia put her in a long prison sentence for a minor crime. Vive la difference.

You mean where here you get locked away for attending a demonstration at the Capitol.

The upside for her is she’ll be around mostly women all the time. She also will have some time to pick up a second language. Gotta look for the positives here.

At least she won’t be subjected to the Star-Spangled Banner for the next nine years.

Odds are good she will never be exposed to the dreaded MonkeyPox in a Russian women’s prison.

Yep. 9 years for the equivalent of a joint is excessive.

We are of the same vintage, though I was a WESTPAC/IO sailor. Countries with which we had status of forces agreements (SOFAs) were usually reasonable about miscreant U.S. service members, and they allowed us to deal with them. Non-SOFA countries, Singapore comes to mind, were different. The troops typically were on good behavior, but occasionally one got caught up in their legal system and was left behind.
.
There currently is the case of a U.S. Navy lieutenant in Japan who suffered a medical emergency while driving his vehicle, passed out, and struck & killed a couple of pedestrians. Notwithstanding a 1960 SOFA between Japan and the USA, the Nippon judge has been an asshole and sentenced the officer to three years in prison. This despite an apology from the lieutenant and an agreement to pay a large restitution to the victims’ family. Even our supposed allies know the Biden administration is a bunch of Whiskey Tangos, and they can take advantage of American citizens.

Good point.

At least we have a Constitution to be stomped upon. But maybe there’s no difference after all.

Was thinking today why Biden is such a ridiculous leader and the whole Dem Party gets away with being on communism’s side rather than our side: Maybe because the election was stolen, and that’s what inevitably happens when the people’s choice is not allowed to prevail.

No idea about foreigners but the sentence for locals caught with up to 2 grams of hash is 15 days.

She had 0.7 grams. Equivalent of 1 large joint.

Saying someone is a smuggler for carrying the equivalent of one joint is ludicrous and obviously political

I know we will have to struggle, but America will continue without her .... it’s a struggle but we will overcome.
