Carrying troops and being armed are two different things. They call those transports.

There were 200 soldiers on that "supply" ship. That's pretty "armed" if you ask me. Presumably every soldier had a rifle.

Probably not. The troops were two companies of artillerymen. The army did not issue rifles to artillery troops. The troops were armed with 6 shot pistols.
