We don't even listen to what Vice President Pence says, so why should we pay much attention to what some loser Vice President said 160 years ago?
But the monetary evidence proves what was really going on. The war was about money. It was always about money. The people who stood to profit from the war made it appear to be about slavery, because this paints them as "good guys" instead of corrupt bastards that murdered people over money.
So yeah, when you control all the printing presses, you can claim whatever you want, and paint yourself as a saint.

How many people in the Southern States heard or read what the VP of the Confederacy said?
I don’t really know for certain why the South seceded, but it surely was because they didn’t want to be dictated to by the Northern hypocrites, or the Central government. It doesn’t matter what the specifics are of why the North wanted to dominate discussion. Any and ALL States have a right to leave the Union. At least until brute force changed that.
I for one, would love to live in a State that removed itself from the FedGov, and chose its own path.
