Dad took me to a Dodger game at the coliseum in 1959, double header against the Braves, I was 12 yo. I had just gotten a transistor radio (this one):
and decided to take it to the game. When we got to our seats discovered there was no need to even turn on the radio, there were so many at the game with radios turned to Vin (and Jerry Doggett) on KMPC that his voice could be heard anywhere in the stadium.
Became a Dodger fan on that day and listened on the radio to Vin every game I could throughout my teen years. Was difficult to get reception in 59 but the next year the games were carried by KFI that has a much stronger signal, much easier to get games.
When Vin called a game on the radio he painted a picture with his words, made you fell like you were there at the game.
There will never be another like him.
I loved Vin & remember listening to playoffs with a transistor radio at school myself.
My story is similar to yours, but my perfect game was AGAINST the Dodgers (Dennis Martinez/Montreal). I saw Hank Aaron at Dodger stadium (twice), though, so I got that goin' for me (while he was one away from the record).
Oh, and My Dad put me in my mother's uterus in '59.
RIP Vinnie.
Koufax perfecto...
only 1 hit in the whole game, cubs Hendley pitched 1 hitter...hit was by an ex-cub.
I think I was at that game. I saw the Dodgers play at Ebbets Field as a boy. I was crushed when the Dodgers moved to the West Coast, overjoyed when my Dad announce the family was moving to LA. I went to Dodgers games at the Coliseum and Chavez Ravine. (Saw the Beatles there in '66 too). As an adult traveling on business I never missed a chance to go to a game.
But when they took a knee for the National anthem I threw my Dodger caps into the garbage and washed my hands of professional sports altogether. I go to high school games now, save a lot of money and have more fun.
