If he doesn't have diabetes or have a high glucose levels then I'm stumped.
I have no idea what damaged his liver. A good friend who was an ER medical doctor burned out his liver with Tylenol he died of asphyxiation (destroyed his pathways.)

Without knowing the cause the only thing I know that might help is milk thistle though that alone will not be enough.
I'm sorry. Prayers and hugs are the best medicine.
