When the tree is about 3-4 feet (about 6 months or so) I put it in the ground.

Is there any chance at all that it could survive in a container, if the container is very large? If so, I'd like to give it a try.

Sure. It can survive inside with a south facing window. 5 gallon minimum on the pot. It won't get huge, but will have to be pruned to stay inside. Mine are growing in pretty much sand mixed with compost. It's a very tough tree.
